In the mid-2000s, while searching for a new field where we could utilize our strengths in design and engineering capabilities as well as communication skills, we noticed global statistics showing that about half of the RORO cargo boats in 'our' size were over 20 years old. We also noted that the environmental potential of RORO vessels, which could reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 60% if conventional trailer transport was replaced by seaborne trade.
That's why Kyokuyo then positioned RORO vessels as an important strategic product for which we could expect replacement demand in the near future, and proceeded with the development of new designs and activities to win orders.
Being the first of a series of 4 vessels that were the result of these efforts, CAPUCINE was a totally new product that incorporated the technology and know-hows accumulated through our experience for PCC and PCTC, such as VIKING ODESSA and CITY OF ST. PETERSBURG.
Intended for regular service in the Straits of Dover, the vessel was a shallow-draft three-decker able to navigate on rivers, with a main deck clear height of 7m to allow for two-tier container loading. Through repeated CFD analysis and water tank tests, an optimal balance between center of gravity and center buoyancy was achieved for a high speed sleek design with the accommodation aft.
CAPUCINE was also our first vessel to be installed with a ballast treatment system. She was compliant with European environmental measures such as Tier II NOx regulations and EU's low sulphur regulations, too. A number of cutting-edge technologies are also to be noted, including a "take-me-home" emergency propulsion system that uses the shaft generator, permitting slow self-navigation even if the main engine fails.
This modern transporter optimized for the latest logistics service in Europe, realized as result of careful market research, in-depth on-site surveys, discussion with shipowners, and designed and built with our solid engineering capabilities, are products that we are proud of, because probably no other could do this but Kyokuyo - whose motto is "Never afraid to take on challenges" and "Solving problems with technical expertise."
