YUTOKU MARU was a large RORO cargo ship that could carry 91 chassis and 178 passenger cars. Her service speed of 20knots, realized by thoroughly refined hull form, big engine and controllable pitch propeller, made her an epoch-making coastal liner for her time.
To reduce stern and bottom vibration caused by propeller induced excitation force, a Kawasaki Dump Tank - stern vibration reducer was installed.
A sloped design was adopted for the bow section of the superstructure to reduce the wind pressure resistance. Along with the pillar-free design for all cargo decks, the experience gained from the construction of this ship was utilized in the development of Kyokuyo's globally-patented SSS-bow (Semi Spherical Shaped Bow) and the design of high-spec RORO series for European owners in later years.
