Small LPG carriers are usually required to keep their overall length under 120m due to port restrictions. In this situation, pursuit of loading capacity inevitably leads to a wider hull form, which, like Kyokuyo's 11,000m3 type, requires innovations to ensure propulsive performance and course stability.
The concept of IRENE A is to provide a larger cargo capacity than the 7,000-7,500m3 class, but without going extremely wide, in pursuit of the best balance within the range of 'normal' hull form equipped with 'normal' engines and equipment.
Compared to the 19.2m width of the 7,000m3 'compact' design and the 21m of the 11,000m3 'wide' design, this ship is about the middle of the two at 20.0m, and has good fuel consumption.
This semi-ref gas carrier can load ammonia, which is now attracting attention for its value as a CO2-free fuel.
