This is the first of a series of six 13,400 TDW multi-purpose cargo ships built by Kyokuyo Shipyard following the series for Ireland. The order was placed by Carisbrooke Shipping, based on the Isle of Wight in southern England.
It was a source of great pride and confidence for us to build a ship for a company in the UK, a world shipping powerhouse that invented the world's first steam engine, built the world's first steel ship (and, its warships demolished our Choshu domain's old-fashioned army through the battles in Kanmon Strait, called Shimonoseki Campaign(!) about 150 years ago.)
As a multi-purpose cargo ship, this vessel is designed for a wide range of cargoes, from container and bulk cargoes such as grain, fertilizers, and coal, to coils and other steel products, and even forest products. Equipped with two 30-ton side cranes, the ship offers great flexibility in cargo loading and handling. It is designed for voyages to the United States, the Caribbean, and the north coast of South America.
The technical highlight of this ship with 4 holds and 4 hatches is the 24.85m x 17.6m high-stowing folding hatch cover for No.2 & No.3 holds, the largest of its type ever supplied by its maker, MacGREGOR. The hatch covers not only tightly seal the extra-wide open hatches, but can also accept 20- and 40-foot container stacks on them. This provides a combined load capacity of 182 TEUs.
