With her striking bright red hull, SCN BERN is a multi-purpose cargo ship in a series of four vessels built for a Swiss shipowner. The vessel, which will be in service for Safmarine, has a container loading capacity that is almost equivalent to that of a dedicated container ship, while also being able to transport bulk cargo and long/heavy steel products with the largest No.2 hold being 51.8m long.
Unlike the MPC series for the U.K. and Ireland, MacGregor's versatile 'lift-away' panels are used for this MPC with box-shaped holds to close the upper deck hatches and to form a second deck in No.2 & No.3 holds. Some of the panels, serving No.2 second deck hatch, can be used as movable bulkhead, too. All panels are designed to take 20' and 40' containers, and are equipped with special joints allowing non-sequential handling. The two side cranes of 80 tons capacity are capable of lifting up to 144 tons when used jointly, and frame spreaders are provided for container and panel lifting.
As a vessel that can be used throughout the world from north to south, she is compliant to the regulations for St. Lawrence Seaway, Panama, Suez and the Kiel Canal, and Ice 1C requirements are also satisfied.
By making use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and water tank model testing, we achieved a sailing speed of 17 knots and economical fuel consumption, while reducing vibration.
SCL BERN and her sisters, which were born after 10 months of detailed discussions with the owner on both technical and commercial aspects, are the ultimate MPC's that bring together the best of Kyokuyo Shipyard's technologies.
