NEWS 298 : REFRESH YOURSELF... WITH LITTER-PICKING!

"Autumn Marine Litter Zero Week" at Akata Beach

On September 22, we participated in a litter-picking activity as part of the "National Autumn Marine Litter Zero Week" nationwide cleanup campaign organized by the Ministry of the Environment and the Nippon Foundation. The Cooperative Association of Japan Shipbuilders, of which we are a member, is also committing to this campaign by starting the "Small and Medium Shipyards' Action to reduce Marine Litter".

This was the second time for us to take part in this event, following the one held on June 9. A total of 21 people this time, including an executive corporate officer, gathered at the same Akata Beach. The weather was clear, with the Typhoon Nanmandol having just passed.

Young technicians concentrating on manufacturing at their workshop; design staff facing their PCs day and night; or managers who are not getting enough exercise these days - each volunteer has his/her own weekdays and everyone enjoyed the event at the sunny and spacious seaside. It seemed that not only the beach but also their minds were refreshed at the same time.

Marine debris is increasing all over the world, and it is said that by 2050 the amount of marine debris, including plastic, will be greater than the amount of fish(!). Even though our individual efforts may be small, there is a crying need for each of us to join forces. So let's try not to produce litter, not to throw litter away and pick up litter when you find it, to protect the future of our ocea

We believe that shipbuilders and equipment suppliers, who receive invaluable benefits from the ocean, must take the initiative to address this global environmental issue. This cleanup activity was a good opportunity for us to remind us of our responsibility, as well as to provide refreshing change of pace.
